Here are all the Democratic lawmakers who have publicly called for Biden to drop out
- Democratic members of Congress are still calling on Biden to drop out of the race.
- Thirty-one House Democrats and four Democratic senators have done so as of Friday, July 19.
- Despite those calls, Biden has continued to insist that he’s not going anywhere.
In the weeks since President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance in June, the list of Democrats in the House and Senate calling for him to drop out of the race has only grown.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first Democratic member of Congress, calling for Biden to step aside in a statement on July 2.
Amid a tense intraparty debate about the president’s political viability, more and more Democratic lawmakers have joined him.
Despite those calls, Biden has stubbornly insisted that he will remain the party’s nominee.
The lawmakers who’ve issued public drop-out calls come from a variety of factions within the party — some of them face competitive reelection fights this year, while many represent safe seats.
Some have stopped short of calling on Biden to drop out but have flatly predicted that he will lose to former President Donald Trump. One of them, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, went as far as to say that he is “OK” with Trump winning and rejects the idea that Trump is a “unique threat to our democracy.”
If Biden steps aside, Vice President Kamala Harris is one of several Democratic contenders who could replace him.
Here are the four Democratic senators who have publicly called on Biden to drop out:
- Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont
- Sen. Jon Tester of Montana
- Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico
- Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio
