If An Election Were Held Today, Ohio Marijuana Legalization Would Be On The Ballot

The legalization of marijuana has been a debate for many years now.  Some states argue that legalizing marijuana would help with herbal healing and other medicine related healing for sick people.  Others, however, argue that legalizing this drug would create negative effects on people who smoke the harmful substance.  Ohio is in the news right now.  If an election were held today, this debate would be on the ballot and most likely would pass.

A Kent State University poll, commissioned by WKYC in Cleveland, found 56 percent of Ohio voters planned to vote “yes” on Issue 3, which would legalize recreational and medical marijuana, and 54 percent planned to vote for Issue 2, which would make it more difficult to write monopolies and other business rights into the Ohio Constitution and directly challenge Issue 3.

“If the election were held today and nearly all registered voters participated, both Issue 2 and Issue 3 would likely pass leading to a constitutional crisis,” Ryan Claassen, associate professor in Kent State’s Department of Political Science, said in an email.

Issue 3 would legalize recreational and medical marijuana use and sales in the Ohio Constitution.  State lawmakers drafted Issue 2, another constitutional amendment, that would prohibit monopolies, oligopolies, and cartels from being written into the Ohio Constitution.

A poll released last week showed 53 percent of Ohioans favored legalizing possession of “a small amount of marijuana for personal use” and 90 percent supported legalizing marijuana for medical use. That poll did not ask voters’ opinions of Issues 2 and 3.

The legalization of marijuana will be a hot topic as we head into election season.  Anything is possible.  What do you think?  For or against the legalization of this drug?
