Minnesota $250M Fraud Prosecutor Steps Down

A top federal prosecutor in Minnesota, credited with uncovering a massive fraud scheme tied to federally funded social programs, has resigned from his post, marking a significant development in a sprawling and politically charged controversy over public corruption and misuse of taxpayer dollars in the state.

Joseph “Joe” Thompson, 47, previously served as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota after being appointed by President Donald Trump in May 2025. Over his roughly six‑month tenure, Thompson emerged as a leading figure in what prosecutors describe as some of the largest alleged fraud and corruption cases ever pursued in the state, including the “Feeding Our Future” scandal—a scheme prosecutors tie to fraud involving millions of dollars in childcare and nutrition funds intended for vulnerable families.

Thompson formally announced his resignation from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Minnesota on January 13, 2026, though he did not publicly disclose a definitive reason for stepping down. His departure comes amid fierce political debate over the scope, handling, and political implications of federal investigations into alleged fraud in state‑administered, federally financed programs.

Federal authorities estimate the scale of potential fraud in Minnesota could exceed $9 billion across multiple state programs since 2018, including Medicaid, autism support services, foster care, early childhood education funds, and food assistance for low‑income families. Much of the scrutiny began with the Feeding Our Future case, which alleged that childcare programs received federal reimbursements without providing legitimate services, with some funds allegedly diverted for personal enrichment.

Thompson and his office have pursued dozens of indictments and convictions in relation to these schemes—even as political fault lines widened. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, facing intense scrutiny over the state’s oversight mechanisms, announced he would not seek re‑election amid the controversy. Critics and some state employees have blamed Walz for failing to act on fraud warnings or address systemic mismanagement within government programs.

The federal investigation also drew national notice as the Federal Bureau of Investigation expanded resources in Minnesota to assist in unraveling alleged “industrial‑scale” fraud in federally funded services, which federal officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel, described as potentially parts of broader nationwide abuses of government funds.

Thompson’s resignation comes at the same time a separate former top federal prosecutor in New York City also made headlines for being charged with federal bribery and kickback offenses, underscoring an ongoing national theme of legal accountability for public officials and those in government roles.

In defending his investigations, Thompson publicly warned that the Minnesota fraud schemes could jeopardize critical services for vulnerable populations. He stated that hundreds of millions of federal dollars may have been improperly used, ranging from autism therapy and foster care support to childcare nutrition reimbursements. Prosecutors alleged entities may have submitted inflated or fraudulent claims to federal and state agencies, with some defendants accused of purchasing luxury items instead of providing promised services.

Many of the investigations into these alleged schemes evolved out of the initial Feeding Our Future findings, widening into autism service providers, housing assistance fraud, and other forms of abuse involving government funds. Prosecutors have said that more than 50 defendants have been convicted in the Feeding Our Future case alone—making it one of the largest COVID‑related fraud prosecutions in the nation.

However, while the fraud probes have drawn bipartisan attention, they have also sparked political pushback. Some state lawmakers and community leaders criticized federal authorities and questioned whether the investigations have unfairly targeted specific communities or failed to differentiate between intentional criminal conduct and systemic administrative issues. The intense scrutiny has put Minnesota’s federal funding and public trust at stake, prompting calls for increased program oversight and reforms at both state and federal levels.

Thompson’s departure adds uncertainty to the future of these investigations, especially as the political and legal landscapes evolve. Few details have been released about who will lead ongoing cases, but investigators and advocates say that the momentum of the fraud probes will continue, even as the resignation raises questions about continuity and prosecutorial strategy.
