2 Sisters Were Sexually Assaulted by Father, Grandfather and Brothers as Mother Helped the Abusers
A British court in Sussex has sentenced six members of the same family following convictions in connection with the prolonged sexual abuse of two young sisters, both under the age of 16. The case, described by authorities as one of the most harrowing domestic abuse crimes they have investigated, highlights a devastating breach of trust within a family setting and underscores the ongoing challenges in protecting vulnerable children from abuse.
The abuse first came to light in January 2025, when the older of the two sisters disclosed details of the abuse to a school staff member. That disclosure triggered an investigation by Sussex Police, which revealed a pattern of sexual assault, rape, and child cruelty perpetrated within the family home. The younger sister later came forward, reporting her own mistreatment, neglect, and assault.
Investigators described a “disturbing catalogue of abuse,” including multiple counts of rape of a child under the age of 13, sexual assault by penetration, and other serious offenses involving both sisters. Based on evidence gathered and testimonies, prosecutors brought 42 charges against six family members, including the girls’ father, mother, grandfather, and two older brothers, as well as the children’s uncle.
A trial at Hove Crown Court began in September 2025, where the defendants faced charges that included rape, sexual assault of a child, cruelty to persons under 16, false imprisonment, and perverting the course of justice. After deliberations, the jury found the family members guilty of 39 of the 42 charges brought against them.
The father, aged 44, was convicted of several counts including multiple rapes of a child under 13, counts of sexual assault, and cruelty. He received a 28-year prison sentence, along with an additional five years added to his licence period as part of an extended sentence aimed at ensuring he is supervised following release.
The mother, aged 43, was convicted of cruelty to a person under 16, false imprisonment, and perverting the course of justice — crimes reflecting her role in neglecting and enabling abuse and in attempting to interfere with the investigation. She was sentenced to ten and a half years in prison.
The children’s grandfather, aged 70, was also convicted for sexually assaulting a child under 13 and was given a nine-year sentence with additional license requirements upon release. Two brothers (aged 24 and 21) were found guilty of multiple counts of rape of a child under 13 and other related offences, with each receiving lengthy prison terms. The 24-year-old had extra time added to his existing sentence due to this conviction.
An uncle, aged 49, was convicted of perverting the course of justice — a charge often associated with attempting to obstruct or interfere with a legal process — and received a three-year prison sentence.
During the investigation, police also noted that the family attempted to intimidate and bully the victims in an effort to make them retract their complaints, though those efforts ultimately failed. Sussex Police and child protection officials have praised the sisters’ courage in coming forward and urged other victims of abuse to speak up.
The sentencing comes amid increasing awareness in the UK and elsewhere of the prevalence of child sexual abuse in domestic settings. Expert advocates stress that while convictions are crucial, prevention through better community awareness, reporting mechanisms, and child welfare supports remains vital. They also call for continued training for educators, health professionals, and social workers to help identify and respond to signs of abuse early.
Following the sentences, police reiterated that both young victims have been receiving support from appropriate child protection and therapeutic services. Officers confirmed ongoing engagement with partner agencies to ensure the girls’ safety and recovery as they grow up outside the abusive environment that defined their early lives.
